Giant kelp forests once thrived along Victoria’s coastline. Today, they are critically endangered. With the right science and community action, we can bring them back.
Island Kelp Recovery is a community-led project, involving local businesses, community groups, residents and experts in marine habitat restoration.

Giant kelp forests are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. Along Victoria’s coast, they supported thriving marine life, fisheries, and coastal communities.
Today, they are listed as a Critically Endangered ecosystem in Australia.
But unlike many ecosystems in decline—we know how to restore kelp forests.
